When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Holiday Temptations

Encouraging you to avoid holiday food temptations on Near a River.

You can avoid giving into holiday temptations.

Normally during the year, I eat a very healthy diet.  Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meats all year long.  But during the holidays, I see temptations everywhere I turn.

Diabetes and cancer run in my family and I try to avoid them at all costs, even during the holiday season.

I asked my doctor how to stay healthy during the holidays, and she told me to avoid these four foods.

  • Pecan pie

Pecans are healthy, but the other ingredients are not.  Corn syrup, butter, and sugar cancel the benefits of the nuts.  If you crave nuts, nibble on unsalted mixed nuts instead.  Or, enjoy a small slice of pumpkin pie, which has more nutrients.

  • Filled chocolates

Everywhere I go, I see chocolate.  Milk chocolates, especially those filled with caramel or creams, are full of fat and sugar.  Avoid this temptation by savoring dark chocolate instead.  Dove makes a dark chocolate square mixed with mint that is very tasty.

  • Stuffing

Stuffing can contain butter and high fat sausage.  Many recipes of stuffing have as many calories as a cheese burger!

If you eat stuffing, make your own.  Skip the sausage, substitute low-sodium chicken broth, and use butter-flavored cooking spray instead of butter.  Wild rice dressing is another good alternative.

  • Mixed drinks

Cocktails are high in calories, especially those made with cream and sugary syrups.  To avoid this food pitfall, choose low-calorie or sugar-free mixers.

I prefer various fruit juices with sparkling water instead of alcoholic drinks. This drink does not make me act goofy or not remember what I said and it is tasty, and it also does not make me gain weight.

You might think that you would feel less festive, less in the holiday spirit, when you try to remain healthy in spite of the holiday season.  But you can enjoy your favorite foods

Just eat a few slow bites of your favorite holiday foods, savor the taste, and then push away from the table.  Then walk around the neighborhood to see the lights.

Remain healthy instead of giving into holiday temptations and soar like an eagle over life’s storms.
