A Rotten Contagion

Try to not catch the rotten contagion that is on the loose!

Have you ever felt happy when you first woke up in the morning and then spent time around a negative group of people?  What happened to your good mood?  Did it turn into a bad mood?  If it did, you are not alone.

There is a rotten contagion on the loose.  It spreads without body fluid, a sneeze, or even air to jump from person to person.

It is called a bad mood.

Recent studies have proven that moods are extremely contagious, and that bad moods spread faster than good ones.

In one study, Purdue University researchers showed one group of subjects a funny clip from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and another group the wrenching “choice” scene from Sophie’s Choice. (The scene in which the SS officer tells Sophie she can only keep one of her children and must choose which child to keep.) Those who viewed the sad scene usually dominated the mood of a group of people who had seen either film.

Other studies have shown that roommates, spouses, and coworkers easily “infect” each other with depression and negativity.

Do you live with someone who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition that causes bad moods? My husband is a Vietnam veteran and suffers from PTSD and dysthymia.  Usually I prevent his bad moods with hugs, snuggles, and massages.  But he still has some grumpy moments.  Instead of letting his grumpiness affect me, I usually just try to think about what I can do at that moment to help him to feel better.  And helping him feel better helps me to remain in a good mood.

Researchers agree with my approach to not catching my husband’s grumpiness. Since most bad moods are absorbed unconsciously, they say the best way to combat the effect of someone else’s bad mood is to be aware that the other person is a in a bad mood and to think positively.

Don’t catch this rotten contagion from anyone!
