When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

A New Four-Letter Word

What does the word “yuck” mean to you?  Recently I redefined this four-letter word based on a life experience.

four-letter word, near a river, bj rae, encouragement for kids, bald eagle

My husband and I were eating breakfast. I ate my favorite morning meal–oatmeal made with almond milk, blueberries, and bananas. He enjoyed a toasted bagel with jam on top. I won’t assess any blame, but one of us dropped some food on a shirt. The other one didn’t notice the food on the mate’s clothing, and we hugged. Of course, the food droppings were now on both his and my shirt.

“Yuck!” we both said.

Now we define “yuck” differently.

Yuck

(Pronounced yuhk).

Part of speech: noun.

1. A four-letter word for the garbage and idiocy that rubs off on someone from another person.

2. A four-letter word for the labels spread to you because of an association with someone else.

“Yuck affects anyone and everyone, often years after alleged events occur.”

This word applies to every part of our lives—our social life, our extended family lives, as well as our professional lives.

Consider the politicians who were popular members of fraternities in college decades ago. As most people did, some drank too much alcohol and others accused them of sexual crimes. Even though these parties occurred decades ago, yuck is still attacking their personal and professional lives. Thus, this is another example of this four-letter word.

YUCK doesn’t care who you are, how long ago you did what you did,

how much money you have, or what political party you support.

In every aspect of our lives, this word means that we should choose those with whom we associate carefully. Therefore, my husband and I don’t associate with anyone who refuses to say the pledge of allegiance or stand with his or her hand over the heart during our national anthem, regardless of who the person is or how important he or she is. We also don’t associate with those who continually stir up trouble by criticizing others publicly. These are unAmerican and abnormal behaviors.

Who knows how these actions and associations will be perceived ten, twenty, or even more years from now?

I’ll never forget that yuck from my past can attack me anytime, and you shouldn’t either.
