Grandmother’s Keys to Persistence

You too can learn from the teaching of my grandmother about persistence.

The eagle is a very persistent bird of prey. It searches, determines its target, then swoops down to obtain its target. Nothing can deter an eagle in pursuit of a target. Like an eagle, I survive because I never give up;  I always persist until I reach my goal. I win when I persist because my grandmother taught me these four keys to persistence.

1.           TAKE IT STEP BY STEP.

My grandmother helped me solve many of my problems when I was growing up. She would think about my problem, examine each issue involved in reaching a solution, and then guide me through the steps I needed to take to solve each issue. Many problems cannot be solved quickly or easily. Sometimes, you have to break a problem down into smaller issues and solve them one by one. If you break your goal into smaller steps and persist with each step one by one in order, you will be much more likely to succeed!

2.           WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, OPEN EVERY OTHER DOOR YOU CAN FIND…

My grandmother exemplified this key to persistence often. When one door closed, she simply smiled and said she would find a better way. Often when trying to reach a goal, the door slams in your face.  When I was working to get my husband’s Veterans Administration (VA)  disability approved, the VA Center that was processing his claim slammed the door in my face. I contacted VA Secretary Robert MacDonald’s office directly. His top-level case manager called me within two hours, spent about three hours listening to our issues, and promised results. Within two weeks, my husband had received a 100% disability rating and was getting the compensation he deserves as a disabled war veteran. So, when one door closes, open all the other doors you can!

3.          AVOID DAMAGING OTHERS.

My grandmother also instilled in me the belief that I should never hurt anyone, and I believe it is very important to avoid damaging others while you are persisting to accomplish your goal.

4.         NEVER LOSE YOUR COOL! ALWAYS HAVE PATIENCE.

My grandmother had endless patience. I never saw her lose her cool no matter what was going on in her life, not even when someone stole all of her income on payday. She had worked hard in the local factory to earn that money and needed it to pay her bills. Instead of becoming angry, she simply made the arrangements with the companies she owed money, filed a police report, and kept on smiling. Witnessing how she handled that one event taught me to keep my cool. When I feel very frustrated when dealing with an issue, I remember my grandmother’s patience. I never lost my cool when I was trying to get away from my abusive ex…My grandmother was long deceased by that time but her patience was always at the forefront of my mind and in my heart. And I succeeded in getting away from him.
