I used to have hard days every year on my birthday, simply because my expectations were not met. Unmet expectations cause a person to be disappointed or depressed. Although it is generally a reasonable expectation for a mother to remember her child’s birthday, apparently it was too challenging for my Mother. So I used to be depressed on my birthday because my Mother never remembered it, even when I lived in her home. This unmet expectation used to make me cry.
Now, even though my Mother still does not remember my birthday, I have a great day every birthday. Simply because I changed my expectations. Now I only have one expectation, a very important expectation.
What do I expect that makes me so happy? I expect myself to do what Jesus would do and be kind to others, especially on my birthday.
Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be ye kind, one to another…” This is what Jesus would do any day, including all special occasions. If you follow Jesus and do this like he did, you will feel more content with your life—especially on special occasions.
Do you struggle with bad memories on the special days in your life? You can stop struggling and have a great day every day of your life if you change your expectations. Have only one expectation, that you think of others instead of your own problems. Then you will have great days instead of hard days.
