Heart Break

Encouragement to prevent heart break on near a river.

Today I found out something that makes my heart break.

Sometimes I just feel that I should do something and cannot avoid doing it.  Today I had such an experience.

While taking care of my friend’s home and cat (Noah), I suddenly got a strong feeling that I had to call my Mother, in spite of our rocky relationship.

As I spent time with Noah, I tried very hard to ignore the nagging feeling that I needed to speak with my Mother.  But I could not make the feeling go away so finally I did call her.

I listened with love even though she has never listened to me lovingly. She is in her 80’s now and doctors have diagnosed her with a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer. Although her November 2017 mammogram showed no issues, just six months later she has stage two breast cancer. In February she was admitted to the hospital for another health issue.  One staff member there noticed a cause for concern and a second mammogram was done.  The second mammogram found her breast cancer and it is too aggressive for any surgical procedures.  She is taking medication to slow the cancer down so she can have a mastectomy but it does not seem to be helping.

This news made my heart break.  Even though my Mother has never been kind to me in my entire life, I still love her.  After all, she is the only Mother I have—even if she has never been a loving Mother.

Even though my heart feels as thought it will break, I do have peace in my heart.  I have communicated with her on a regular basis, sent her gifts every birthday and holiday, and told her I loved her even when she did not tell me she loves me back. I have always treated her lovingly.

Have your parents been unkind to you?  If so, remember this.  You do not have to allow anyone including your parents to hurt you, but you should always treat everyone as kindly as possible.  You never know how much time anyone has left on this earth.

  • I am so glad you made the call to your Mother. As we both know, like threatening illnesses have a way of softening the hearts of those who have otherwise been anythng but kind. I pray your Mother will turn to our Lord and trust Him as her Lord and Savior while she still has time.
