How I cope with holiday depression.
I feel depressed and anxious today on this holiday.
Why am I depressed?
I feel depressed and anxious for two reasons.
First, my Grandma and brother are in heaven together and I miss them.
Grandma was my world. As a child, I spent every holiday at her home. I helped her in the kitchen and played with cousins all day.
My brother and I loved walking to school. On the way to school, I jumped into every puddle and splashed him. He just laughed.
On the way home from school, we caught snakes and any critters we found and put them in our lunch boxes. Then when we got home, we put our lunch boxes in the kitchen. Peeking around the corner to watch the babysitter opening our lunch boxes always made us giggle. She did not like our critter friends. She screamed and actually jumped straight up from the floor onto the kitchen table.
I enjoyed spending time with Grandma and my brother as a child and now I can no longer do that.
Second, we need to get home but cannot.
Our vehicle needs new special tires. We ordered them almost a month ago but are still waiting for them. My allergies are disabling where we are but at home I have no allergy problems at all. We need to get home 3 weeks ago!
How do I cope with holiday depression?
Today I coped with my depression by keeping busy.
I wrote the article “Celebrate Love”. My husband and I walked together. We took a nap with our dogs in the bed with us. I ate Easter dinner and practiced piano lots. I thought about everything I am thankful for and prayed lots.
Do you struggle with holiday depression too? If so, you might want to try these strategies to cope.
- KEEP BUSY (doing anything legal).
- SPEND TIME WITH LOVED ONES AND LOVED PETS.
- PLAY OR LISTEN TO MUSIC.
- EXERCISE.
- THINK ABOUT THE POSITIVES AND WHAT YOU ARE THANKFUL FOR.
