John Wanamaker

Encouragement to learn from the example of John Wanamaker on near a river.

What can you learn from John Wanamaker?

About fifty years ago my husband knew a man named John Wanamaker in Philadelphia who owned Wanamaker Department Store.  This man’s grandfather was the Mr. Wanamaker who ushered  America into the consumer age.  All of the Wanamakers were known for their attention to detail and good judgment.

My husband told me something interesting about John Wanamaker, about his hiring practices.

He always personally interviewed every employee.  Then he narrowed his list of prospective employees down to a few people he was seriously considering.  One by one, he invited these candidates out to eat in a restaurant.  Of course, they chatted about the job and the person’s worthiness for the job.  But can you guess what the deciding factor was for John Wanamaker?

If the job candidate put salt and pepper on his or her food before tasting it, John would not hire him or her.  Why?  This action showed the person lacked good judgment. A person with good judgment would taste his or her food before adding salt and pepper to it.

Did you know that others are watching what you do?  Yes, they are.  And the people who count will notice if your actions show good judgment.

If you are looking for a job or even for a companion, pay attention to everything you do.  Like John Wanamaker, other people care about your attention to detail and your judgment.
