When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Just Breathe…

Encouraging you to just breathe on near a river.

When you feel stressed, here is a great way to “just breathe” and actually relax…

When you seem stressed, someone may tell you to “just breathe”.  But it is very hard to focus on your breathing when your mind is racing with frustration and anger from a stressful day.

Did you know that “alternate nostril breathing” for just a few minutes each day can restore balance to your brain, improve your sleep, calm your emotions?  It can also boost your thinking and calm your nervous system.

Your nose is directly linked to your brain and nervous system.  Breathing in through your left nostril will access the right side or “feeling side” of your brain.  Alternatively, breathing in through your right nostril will access the left side or “thinking side” of your brain. Consciously alternating your breath between either nostril will enable you to activate your entire brain.

Practicing alternate nostril breathing has many benefits.

  • Revitalizes you.

Just try this when you feel tired or stressed.  You will notice that it gives you an extra burst of energy.

  • Improves brain function.

Since this technique brings equal amounts of oxygen to both sides of your brain, your brain will function much better after you do this. Try it before an interview, exam, or important meeting. You will notice that you think more clearly.

  • Calms agitation.

Getting enough oxygen to your whole brain has a calming effect.  After you try this breathing technique, you will feel more stable and calm.

  • Improves sleep.

When you struggle to sleep at night, lay on your right side and gently close your right nostril with your right thumb.  Breathe through your left nostril.  This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and calms you down. It also slows your heart rate.

A restless mind cannot relax and keeps the entire body from getting much needed rest. Alternate nostril breathing melts away imbalances between your right and left brain hemispheres and calms your thinking.  Practice this breathing technique to calm down so you can rest at night.

Please don’t allow the stress in your life to control your mind.  Instead, you can control your mind and overcome life’s stresses.  Just breathe using the alternate nostril breathing technique! It may sound weird or different but it really works.  The United States Defense Department is now recommending this technique for Veterans who suffer from PTSD and other mental disorders. Navy Seals use it also. And, believe me, it keeps me calm. It helps with PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disorders, and depression.

Parents, teach your child this technique and you will have a much more peaceful and happy home!

Just breathe through your stressful moments!
