When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Just Focus

When in pain, just focus and you may feel better!

Encouraging you to focus or meditate when in pain on Near a River.
Focus when you are in pain. This is a picture of the piano at the farm mentioned in this post.

Having experienced much physical and emotional pain throughout my life, I could be called a “lay-person pain expert”.

Believe it or not, I have had 17 surgeries in the past and am facing the 18th in just six days.

Pre-op pain is a big issue for me at the moment, but I am coping fairly well.  Even though my husband rubs my head to help me fall asleep at night, I still awaken hurting and struggle to fall asleep again.

How do I cope with hurting?  Always optimistic and looking at the glass as half full not half empty, I meditate.

There is a farm I love where one of my favorite writers lived and died.  Feeling completely at peace and happy there, I love walking around this farm.   There are trails in the woods, complete with animals and views of water.  In the home on the farm is an antique piano (see picture above) that the writer was learning to play when she died, and I love to play this piano. In fact, the last time we were at the farm, my husband took a picture of me playing it.

So when I am in pain, I just focus and picture myself playing the piano on the farm and walking around the woods.  Focusing on something positive in my future helps me to remember that this pain will pass.  This farm happens to be 1,251 miles from our home, but we will drive there as soon as I can walk unaided again.

When you focus or meditate on something positive in the future, you are truly reducing your pain. When I do this, my brain seems to be distracted from the pain signals it has been sending and begins to send weaker signals.

If you say you have nothing to look forward to in your life, think harder.  You might want to think about a day when you no longer hurt and feel good again.  Count the days until you expect to be pain free.  For example, in just 36 days, BJ will be mostly pain free.

When you hurt, cope with it by trying to focus on something you are looking forward to.
