When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

No Easy Answers

If every parent taught every child there are no easy answers, the world would be a much safer place.

Recently a gunman opened fire in a country music bar in a small college town called Thousand Oaks, California.  Thirteen people died, many of them college students who happened to be taking a break from their studies.

After these kinds of things happen, people often say they are “keeping victims’ families in their prayers”.  That is a fine thing to do, but we can do more as a society to prevent these tragedies.

We often blame violent behavior on broken homes and growing up in poverty, but that there is more to it than that.

What can we do about the violence in our crazy world?

Too many people today expect instant easy answers to every problem.  When some people do not get an instant answer, they become unable to cope and at times become violent. As a society, we need to learn that there are no easy answers to life’s problems.  If we all learned this and accepted it, life would be less violent.

When children learn they must figure out how to solve problems when Mom and Dad do not simply solve their problems for them, they are on their way to understanding this concept and less likely to become violent.

I grew up in a broken home in extreme poverty, but I have never resorted to violence.  While growing up, I could confide in Grandma but not in my Mother. On the days when I did not see Grandma, I had to solve my problems myself—problems with peers, teachers, and any other problems.  And on the days when I did see Grandma, she just listened and asked lots of questions.  She made me think through each problem and its solution. When I needed money for anything, I had find a way to earn it.

As a child, I learned that there are no easy answers and I must work to find the answers.

Please do not misunderstand me.  I am not condoning my Mother’s parenting, nor am I recommending that parents raise their kids the way I was raised.

Too many people have grown up expecting easy answers to life’s problems.  The world would be a much safer place if more people grew up believing that they can solve their own problems peacefully—even the more difficult problems that we all face from time to time.

There simply are no easy answers.
