You can cope with pain without narcotic medications.
I had a hard day. I woke up at 3 am, then we drove for a few hours to have part of my left foot amputated at 7:30 am and then we drove home. An hour into our drive home, the pain medication injected into my left foot during surgery began to wear off. THE PAIN BEGAN!!! It got much worse when I had to walk into our home.
Negative aspects of pain.
Being in pain deteriorates my mood and increases my irritability. This mood change negatively impacts my overall mental health. Pain forces me to change my way of life to manage it. I cannot participate in my favorite activities right now and this fact makes me feel anxious and depressed.
How I cope with pain.
I know I must cope with pain in the best way possible to avoid increased depression and anxiety because I want to be as easy to live with as possible. Therefore, I never want to drive my husband or our two dogs over the edge.
My surgeon prescribed a narcotic pain medication. I told my husband not to fill it. I have been coping with the pain my way–naturally!
I meditated on my pain as the hyperlink above describes. Then I pictured myself hiking in the beautiful mountains that surround our home wearing normal shoes with no pain. I also meditated by praying to God, asking Him to take this burden from me.
Meditating refocused my brain away from the narcotic. It allowed me to focus on positives in my life instead of on my pain.
Meditation has reduced my pain today.

Snuggling (touch)
Touch has many benefits. One is pain reduction. I snuggled with Eric for an hour this afternoon and with our very snuggly Malchi Chico the rest of the day.
I love the Ellen Degeneres show. Ellen makes me laugh. I watched the Ellen show at 4 pm and laughed. Laughing while watching her show killed my pain.
Laughter helps your body heal also. Click here to learn more about how laughter helps your body.
My husband tries to keep me laughing also. He tells jokes and tickles me.
Reading out loud helps me cope with pain. Right now I have been reading John Tesh’s Intelligence For Your Life and The Collected Works of Flannery O’Connor. When I read out loud, I focus on the words and my pain level goes down.
Art therapy also reduces my pain. It drops it down a few notches so I can think about other things. I like to color in an adult coloring book. When I color, I feel much less pain.

There is a nation-wide opiod addiction crisis.
Opiod addiction frequently starts with narcotic pain medications. I have reason to believe that addiction issues exist in my birth family. I simply will not participate in this crisis.
Parents, set a good example for your children. Cope with your own pain without narcotics as much as you can. Tell you children what you are doing and why.
Cope with your pain without narcotics as much as you possibly can and keep yourself healthy!
