Do you want to know a secret that helps people remain young longer?
Did you know that exercise dramatically slows the aging process? It does. New research suggests that exercise helps people look and remain young longer.
British researchers compared a group of 125 avid bicyclists between 55 and 79 years old with a group of adults in their 20’s and 30’s. They found that people who biked long distances have more muscle mass, less body fat, and healthier cholesterol levels than their sedentary peers. Additionally, the cyclists have the memory, balance, and immune system function of the younger adults.
As people get older, their bodies make fewer and fewer T cells (which help protect us against infection). Researchers found that the active older adults were still making as many T cells as their younger counterparts. This means that these older active adults have less risk for infections, cancer, and auto-immune diseases.
Medical science has increased the average life span into the 80’s. Now that we are living longer, we need to figure out how to also live well as we live longer. Exercise is one key to doing this.
But if you are not accustomed to exercise, please do not simply begin a new exercise routine on your own. It would be wise to follow these steps.
-
See your doctor.
Tell him that you want to begin an exercise program. Make sure that exercise will not exacerbate any health problems you may have and that you are doing the right exercises for your health conditions.
-
Track your progress.
How do you feel? Use a pedometer or activity tracker to register how many steps you take each day, or use a stopwatch or timer to time your workouts. Then write down the information about your work out as well as how you felt before, during, and afterward.
-
Do not expect to see immediate results.
Wait patiently for your health to improve.

I love to exercise and try to walk about 10 miles each day. Of course, there are days when I do not meet my goal but I do not give up. Hopefully, you exercise daily too.
We all need to remain young and healthy as long as possible!
