What Can You Do?

Encouragement to know what can you do on near a river.

What can you do to prevent murder and other violent crime?  Here are some suggestions.

If you were out jogging or walking and someone attacked you, what would you do? What can you do to try to prevent someone from getting the best of you?

If you plan ahead and are always prepared, the likelihood that someone can hurt you is much less.

Here are some safety precautions you can take.

  • Always let someone know where you will be.

When I am out of the house, I always let someone know where I will be.  That way, if anything happens, someone will know exactly where to try to find me.

  • Self-defense classes.

In a self-defense class, you learn how to keep someone from abducting and/or hurting you.  You learn how to do this with just your own body.  A good instructor can teach you very well how to defend yourself against any type of attacker.

I took self-defense classes when I was going through my divorce and had a restraining order against my violent soon-to-be ex-husband.  These classes gave me the confidence I needed to be able to walk in public without anxiety.

  • A Smart Watch

Smartwatches were not available when over 10 years ago when I was going through my divorce, but they are now.  One particular smartwatch, the Gizmo, allows you to store up to 10 phone numbers and calls them without a phone nearby.  If you were walking alone and saw a suspicious person nearby, you could call someone and mention a predetermined code word.

  • Bear spray or self-defense spray.

Where we live, I am more likely to be attacked by a bear than a person.  So I carry bear spray, which is like mace on steroids.  If anyone or anything approached me, he, she, or it would know that I want to be left alone.

What can you do to protect yourself?  You need to be vigilant and careful, regardless of where you live.

Even if you live in a small community where everyone knows everyone, at least a small amount of caution is still wise.

Parents, please share this information with your children, even if your children are in college or on their own.  Your children may not have ever thought of protecting themselves–but perhaps everyone should!

As long as dangerous people walk among us, perhaps we all should be prepared to defend ourselves at all times!
