When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Yoda Was Right

Yoda said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Yoda said, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” He was right.

Although I agree with Yoda’s statement, I would add that unmet need leads to fear, then fear leads to anger, and anger leads to hate.  Additionally, I would add that fear and anger and hatred all lead to irrational behaviors that cause suffering.

Why do I believe this?

Years ago I had a friend who was claustrophobic.  Often she became very fearful in any particular area when she could not understand how she could get to a safer place.  At first, I did not know what to do when her fear caused her to say irrational things like, “I will die if I do not get out of here.”

But one day I figured out a way to help her.  When she became fearful and said irrational things, I held her hand and looked her in the eyes and told her that if she followed me, she would be okay.  Once in a safer place, she became calm and rational again.  Her need to escape had been met.

What happened on Saturday, October 27, 2018, in a Jewish synagogue

was another example of irrationality.

A man carried an assault weapon and two handguns into a Pittsburgh Pennsylvania synagogue and opened fire on innocent people who were there to worship.  Eleven innocent Jewish people are now dead because someone acted irrationally.

I do not know what this man’s unmet needs were, but he must have had a few. His unmet needs were probably psychological and he needed intensive help.  Nevertheless, how he responded to his unmet needs was wrong and he should not have had access to guns.

Unfortunately, his unmet needs took him down a dark path and he created suffering for countless innocent people.

Anger and hatred are taking this country down the dark path.  This dark path is filled with too many people with unmet needs who commit irrational actions.  There is only one way to get back on the right path.  We must find ways to meet the needs of more Americans so they do not start down the dark path.

Yoda also said, “In a dark place we find ourselves, and a little more knowledge lights our way.” If Yoda were here next to me,  he would agree with my solution.

We must work together to enable more people to meet their needs and protect everyone.

If you are Jewish, I send you my sincere condolences.
