Here is someone who did not give up on hope in spite of adverse life circumstances.
At age 14, his family was evicted from their home. At 16, he weighed 225 pounds and was arrested several times for theft. Soon after he met his high school football coach, who mentored him in football. He quickly found success, and attended the University of Miami on a football scholarship. There, however, he sustained injuries. Future Hall of Famer Warren Sapp took his starting spot. His dream of playing football was over. He hit rock bottom and fell into a depression.
But another athletic opportunity soon presented itself. He followed in his father’s wrestling footsteps, though he struggled to find his competitive identity. At his first event, fans booed him. Soon after, he was injured and could not wrestle for a while. But when he returned, he changed his wrestling identity to stay true to who he was. He became happier, and the crowds fell in love with him. He soon became the biggest star in professional wrestling.
His success and vibrant personality opened another professional avenue: acting. Today, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of Hollywood’s most prolific leading men. In 2016, he earned more than 64 million.
Once broke and depressed, he has now been the World’s #1 International Box Office Star. He was even named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
His story is proof that success does not happen overnight. It is also proof that continuing to hope in spite of depression will enable you to become successful!
