Dear Concerned Students…

Hopefully concerned students will read this post.

Dear Students concerned about violence,

I admire those of you from Parkland High School and everyone else who spoke out about the problems our society has with violence at the Florida Town Hall Meeting last night.  You are right to be concerned about guns and gun control. But there are other weapons, root causes of this violence problem, that we all need to think about and deal with.

While I agree that guns must be regulated more strictly and that the shooter at your school last week should not have been allowed to (legally) purchase a gun, I beg you to consider the root causes of the current violence problem.

The basic underlying cause is lack of morality.  This is not your fault, but your generation seems to be suffering a great deal because of it–and your generation can change it.

You see, your generation grew up differently than older generations did.  We watched shows with guns and shooting, but we passively watched cowboys fighting with guns and the good guys always won.  Your generation, however, actively plays video games in which you shoot to kill.  These violent video games desensitize you to the real effects of real guns.  Unfortunately, this desensitization undermines morality, warps the minds of some people, and causes some to become deranged killers. Perhaps you might also consider promoting legislation to restrict or ban violent video games.

There is also a broader lack of morality in society.  Again, this is not your fault but your generation can fix this.  When I was in school, the biggest problems were cigarette smoking and ditching class.  But now with the lack of morality in society, too many students lack morals to guide them.  This lack of morals causes people to turn to violence to solve their own problems, including trying to solve their own mental health problems with violence.

Yes, we need to change (the symptom of) our gun control laws but we also need to deal with the real cause of violence in our society.
