Today, on March 29, 2018, I did something that took a lot of courage.
Toward the end of a Maundy Thursday church service on March 29, 2018, the minister asked for those who wanted him to wash their feet to come forward. At first I thought I did not want to do that. My feet look strange now that part of both has been amputated. But I did find the courage to come forward.
Quickly I discovered that the only thing to fear was fear itself. Sure, the woman sitting next to me in the pew and the minister had quizzical looks on their faces after they saw my feet, but the foot washing was definitely a blessing.
I have decided that I will summon my courage more often. I will also:
- Never be afraid to serve anyone anywhere, in public or in private.
- Not be afraid to speak my mind on any topic that I feel is important.
Do you know what the definition of courage really is? Courage is not having the strength to go on but instead it is going on when you have no more strength. It is a special kind of strength that allows you to do what you need to do no matter what the world says and stand up for what is right (even when the world seems to be against you.
It takes a special kind of strength to be who you really are, to conquer your fear, face consequences with a brave face, and move forward in your life.
