Damaged or Personalized?

Encouragement to consider yourself personalized not damaged on near a river.

Recently I commented to a friend about feeling like damaged goods due to health reasons.  She replied by telling me this story.

In 2004, my friend and her husband bought a new Buick Century, a car that was fairly popular in this area at that time.  When they had owned it for just two weeks, they visited a state park in Pennsylvania.  Their kids jumped out of the car and ran to find the trail.  After a few minutes, the kids came running back to the car, “Mom and Dad, you should move the car to the other parking lot.  It’s closer to the trail head,” they shouted.

Her husband did move the car.  Carefully looking around and noticing there was a tree to one side of the car in the back, he slowly backed up.  But, oops! He had not realized the tree was leaning to one side and backed into it.

My friend felt their new car was “damaged goods”.   According to the body shop, the only way to fix the dent was to replace the lid of the trunk. Because her husband was not willing to do that, the damage on the car would remain.

It did not take her long to begin to think of their new car differently.  At times she could not remember where she had parked it and it was not the only Buick Century in the parking lot. So when she looked for it, she just searched for the Buick Century with the dent in the back.   Then the idea dawned on her that their car was personalized instead of damaged. Perfectly drive-able, it just had a unique appearance. Now she was thankful for the dent in the back of the car as well as for the fact that she had a car to drive.

This story made me realize something.  Although I have many scars on my body, my body is what it is.  From now on I will look at it more positively and consider it personalized instead of damaged. I will also be thankful for all the things I can do.

Do you have health problems or other problems?  Just live the most productive life you can and be thankful for what you can do. Consider yourself personalized instead of damaged goods!
