Facebook announced it has had a data breach. What should all Facebook users do?
On September 28, 2018, Facebook announced that it has experienced a data breach. A vulnerability in Facebook’s code put the personal information of 50 million user accounts at risk.
Hackers gained the ability to steal “access tokens” that allow users to stay logged into their accounts. These tokens allow fraudsters to take over your Facebook profile and access any third party accounts that you have used your Facebook credentials to log into.
Since Facebook discovered this unfortunate event, it has done three things:
- Fixed the vulnerability.
- Informed law enforcement to investigate.
- Reset the access tokens on all Facebook accounts.
Although Facebook has done all it can do to hinder fraudsters, you still need to do all you can to prevent things like this from affecting your Facebook account, especially if you have any financial accounts connected to your Facebook account.
What can you do to prevent things like this from affecting your Facebook account?
You can set up dual login. Dual log in means that no one can access your account before typing in a code that is sent to your cell phone. How can you set up a dual log in?
- Log into your Facebook account.
- Left click on the down arrow in the upper right corner.
- Then left click on the word “settings”, the fourth word from the bottom in the list that pops up.
- Left click on the “Security and log in” option. Then find the words “use Two-factor authentication” under the heading “Two-factor authentication”. Left click the word “edit” to the right of these words. Then follow the prompts to set up this important Facebook option.
Using the dual log in costs you an extra minute when you log into Facebook, but every minute you spend engaging in this process is worthwhile. I set this up on my Facebook account after it was hacked in 2017. Since I set it up, my account has not been hacked again.
