If Only…

Encouragement to help abused children on Near a River.

If only a child could pick his parents…

If only a child could pick his parents, the world would be a much happier place.  Too bad the soul of an unborn child cannot observe prospective parents from heaven and choose the parents he would like to have.  Were this the case, children would be happier because they would not be born to abusive parents.

If only I had been able to choose my parents,  I would have chosen my Sunday School teacher.  We connected the moment we met and she was always kind and loving to me.  I was only three years old my first day of Sunday School, and every year she moved up with my class until I graduated from high school so she could continue to be my teacher.  She took me out to lunch sometimes and was a great listener and friend.  I send her a Christmas card every year and still speak with her on the phone as often as possible.

But these two unfortunate facts remain. No child gets to choose his parents and I grew up in a very abusive household.  Fortunately, my Grandma’s constant love and the love of my Sunday School teacher kept me grounded.  Their love and support gave me hope and a reason to keep trying to live and be the best person I could be.

Having many memories of my Mother’s abuse, I still cringe when I think of the tense and upsetting holidays in my childhood home.  I cannot forget the physical pain I endured, especially the pain of my shoes hurting my feet and being unable to run and play with my siblings.  Or the ridicule of my peers when I wore “high water” pants to school.

Instead of focusing on the pain I now have in my right foot and the pain I am facing with my second amputation surgery, I am trying to find ways to help other children who are growing up in abusive homes.  In June of this year, I wrote that the proceeds from my book would be used to make sure that children receive proper fitting shoes, but now I am expanding that concept. I have decided to donate to charities that support abused children every penny of profit I receive from the sales of my book, Near a River.

If only I could sell enough books to raise at least $500,000 to help abused children, I would feel like I had done something good with my life.  No child deserves to grow up in an abusive home like I did, yet many are.  They need all the help we can give them.

Please help every abused child soar like an eagle above the too numerous storms in his life.  If only you could help me by sharing this post and helping me raise money to help abused children!

  • Many Sunday School teachers and Grandma's never realize the impact they are having on the lives of others. I preached a sermon many years ago titled: "Our Other Mothers"! In that sermon I addressed many of the things which you spoke of in this blog. May God bless this very noble effort to raise money for those children would not have the things they so need if it were not for efforts like yours. God bless!
