ANTs

ANTs are Automatic Negative Thoughts.  Do you know how to squash yours?

Your thoughts determine how you feel.  And you can decide to change your thoughts to improve how you feel.

It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?  But this really is an effective way to overcome depression and calm anxiety and cope with PTSD.

Changing your brain to change how you feel is a challenge.  It involves forcing yourself to think positively.  I did this about five years ago.

A friend sent me an encouraging greeting card.  It said, “Always believe something wonderful is about to happen.  And have a wonderful day”.  Just reading that card made me feel better. I kept it close to me so I could read it all day and all night.

After a few days, I felt less depressed and anxious.  I could cope with my PTSD better.

Now I am facing another mental health challenge. We are moving in about 10 days.  We have to get everything packed before the movers arrive on May 5.  This task seems so huge and I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it.  We have to pack everything in less than 9 days.

I tried breaking the packing down into smaller tasks.  Instead of packing a whole room, I focused on packing just the closet in the room and then rewarding myself for completing one task. I still felt overwhelmed just by looking at all the boxes around me.

Then I remembered the card my friend sent me.  I repeated what it said over and over and over.  I stopped feeling overwhelmed.  Today I packed a whole room!

Change your thoughts to improve your depression and anxiety and enable yourself to cope with your PTSD.

Give yourself something positive to focus on now.  Think about this constantly. Do not think about anything that overwhelms you when already you feel upset.  Feeling overwhelmed causes anxiety and depression.
