An old couple around the age of 70 walked into a lawyer’s office one day. They told him they wanted to file for divorce.
The couple had been arguing for their 40 years of marriage. Since their children were now grown, they both wanted a divorce. They just wanted to live their own lives free from the unhappiness of their 40 years of marriage.
Unable to understand why a couple would seek a divorce after 40 years of marriage, the lawyer struggled to do the papers.
While they were signing the papers, the wife told the husband, “I really love you, but I really can’t carry on anymore. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, I understand”, the husband replied.
Looking at this, the lawyer suggested a dinner together, just 3 of them. The wife thought, “Why not, since we are still going to be friends?” At the dining table, there was an awkward silence. The first dish was roasted chicken. Immediately, the old man took the drumstick for the old lady. ”Take this, it’s your favorite.” Looking at this, the lawyer thought maybe there’s still a chance, but the wife was frowning when she answered. ”Don’t you know that I hate drumsticks?”, she retorted.
Little did she know that, over the years, her husband had been trying all ways to please her and that drumsticks were his favorite. Little did he know that she never thought he understood her at all. And little did he know that she hated drumsticks even though all he wanted was the best for her. That night, both of them couldn’t sleep. After hours of tossing and turning in bed, the old man couldn’t take it anymore. Knowing that he still loved her and needed her in his life, he tried to call her to tell her “I love you”.
He picked up the phone and dialed her number, but she did not answer. So he kept trying to call her. On the other side, she was sad. She couldn’t understand why after all these years, he still didn’t understand her at all. Knowing that he was trying to call, she refused to answer the phone.
“What’s the point of talking now that it’s over? I have asked for it and now I want to keep it this way” she thought. Her phone kept ringing so she decided to pull the phone cord from the wall. Unfortunately, she forgot that he had heart problems.
The next day, she received news that he had passed away. Rushing down to his apartment, she saw his body, lying on the couch still holding on to the phone. He had had a heart attack when he was still trying to call her.
In spite of her sadness, she still had to sort through his belongings. While looking through his drawers, she found a life insurance policy, dated the day they had married with herself as the beneficiary. With it was a note. “I love you from the bottom of my heart, you are my everlasting love”, it began. “To my dearest wife, by the time you’re reading this, I’m sure I’m no longer around, I bought this policy for you. Though the amount is only $100k, I hope it will help me continue my promise that I made when we married. Although I am not around anymore, I want this money to continue taking care of you, just the way I would if I had lived longer. I want you to know I will always be by your side because I love you”
Her tears flowed like a river.
