This Memorial Day…

What do you think about as you enjoy your Memorial Day barbecue?

Remember why we celebrate Memorial Day. This is the World War II Monument in Washington, DC.

Every year holidays come and go.  Too many of us think of each holiday as simply a day of paid time off work.

I believe Memorial Day is different than any other holiday.  On this day we should think about the brave men and women who fought so we can be free.

On Memorial Day I think about the 405,399 soldiers who died in World War II, the 54,246 who died in the Korean War, the 90,220 who died in Vietnam, the 1,565 who died in the Persian Gulf War, and the 6,852 who have died in the global war on terror.

Five hundred fifty-eight thousand and two hundred and eighty two soldiers have died since World War II began in September 0f 1939.  Wow.  A lot of soldiers have died so I can be free, so I can have freedom to go where I want to go and attend any church I choose to attend. And there are so many more veterans who returned home from their service to our country with permanent wounds and scars, many invisible.

I love these brave men who have defended our country.  I stand by and with them every chance I can. and I hope that you do the same.

As you enjoy the food at your cookout this weekend and your time off work, I hope you remember both those who died for our freedom and those returned home.  I hope you thank God for these brave men and women. Please remember that you can thank God publicly because of their sacrifices for your freedom.

Be thankful for the sacrifices others have made for your freedom on this Memorial Day.
