Research shows that we should shower less often, especially if we have skin issues…
Today, the Sunday before Memorial Day, I celebrated by working in my large garden all day with a 12 year-old helper. My helper and I worked hard all afternoon and actually prepped the garden and planted the plants.
So naturally I showered when I came in the house, right? Well, as I got into the shower, John Tesh came on my radio, telling me that research shows that we shower too much, that we should shower less—only once or twice a week.
John Tesh explained that the hot water that we use to clean our bodies during a bath or shower dries our skin, especially as we get older. And that the combination of soap and hot water kills good bacteria that grow on our skin. We should only use soap on the parts that need soap—our feet, groins, and armpits–to reduce the amount of good bacteria we kill during a shower or bath.
In another John Tesh announcement, he said that taking regular showers with water supplied by your city might actually cause brain damage. Researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine say the culprit is manganese, a mineral found in water supplies that can harm the nervous system.
In a study, the researchers calculated the amount of manganese humans would inhale by showering for just 10 minutes a day. They found that after 10 years of showering, a person would be exposed to doses of the metal 50 to 75 percent higher than those needed to damage a rat’s brain. These doses could lead to learning and coordination disabilities, behavioral changes and a Parkinson’s-like tremor condition.
John Tesh might be right about the fact that we all need to shower less. But I work in my garden every day in the spring and summer. Do you think I should shower less?
