Just Suppose…

You may have heard this before, but please just suppose along with me anyway.

Just suppose that you have an unusually hard day at work and are driving home late in the evening.  You are feeling very tired, upset, and frustrated.

Suddenly a severe pain starts in your chest and drags out into your arm and up into your jaw.  Although you are five minutes away from the nearest hospital, you do not know if you should try to hold on that long before getting help.

The Red Cross trained you in CPR, but your instructor did not teach you how to do it to yourself.

Do you suppose there is a way you can survive a heart attack alone without medical help?  There might be, even though someone who is alone and has a heart attack usually begins to feel faint and loses consciousness in about 10 seconds before passing out.

Just cough deeply and constantly as hard as you can!  Take a deep breath before each cough, and make sure you prolong this deep cough.  Repeat a deep breath and a deep cough every two seconds constantly until help arrives or until you feel your heart beating normally again.

Why can coughing help in this situation?  Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing squeezes the heart and keeps blood circulating.  This squeezing by the cough puts pressure on the heart that helps it regain normal rhythm.
