Tell Someone!

There is a time to keep private information private and a time to tell someone…

Today I heard about a man who died in the Emergency Room.  His life could have been spared had the ER staff known about his medical issues.

Unfortunately, this man was not close to his family members and had not spoken with them in years.  So when the medical staff called his brother, his brother was unable to give them any help.  The man died before the doctors discerned the reason for his unconsciousness.

TELL SOMEONE!

If you have a medical condition, please tell someone!  Tell anyone who might be able to help medical staff members should you become unconscious.

If you do not have anyone you can tell, perhaps you could wear a medical id bracelet.  Or, you could carry on your person at all times a list of your medical conditions and the medications you take. When a person is unconscious, medical staff can and often does go through the person’s belongings for any clues.

Also, it is wise to know about the medical problems of your family members.  Even if you are not close to them, please communicate with them about all the medical issues that each person has.  You might keep a list of these with you at all times, too. Often the illnesses of family members give doctors clues as to what a patient’s problem might be.

***

No one knows when he or she will have a major health issue that could render him or her unconscious.

Do you have any health issues like most people have? If so, before you go to bed tonight, please do at least one of these things.

  • Tell people who might be able to assist medical staff about your health and medications.
  • Purchase a medical ID bracelet.
  • Make a list of your health conditions as well as the known health conditions of your family members. Include the medications and dosages you take also. Carry this information with you at all times.

Sometimes you need help and cannot help yourself.  It is wise to be prepared for these times.
