Walking in the Woods?

Do you ever enjoy walking in the woods?  Here is some important info for you!

Imagine this scenario.  You are taking a vacation and decide to go hiking.  You tell your family members where you are going and when you should be back, but you do not return when your family is expecting you.  So your family calls 911 to get help to find you.

Did you know this can cost you lots of money?  Even though most search and rescue team members are volunteers, search and rescue is not a free benefit in most states.  The helicopter that flies around looking for you will cost around $6,000 an hour, and the Fish and Game Department will charge you for its time and equipment also.

In April in NH, a man hiked alone.  When his wife did not get the message he had texted her that he was safe, she called 911 and Search and Rescue began to look for him.  He had to pay a big bill even though he believed he had done the right thing and notified his wife that he was safe.

There is one way to avoid having to pay for Search and Rescue to find you.  Before you even leave for your hike, purchase a Hike Safe Card from the Game Warden in the state in which you are hiking.  This card only costs $25 or $35 per family.  If you have one of these cards, Search and Rescue bills you only if you have acted recklessly or intentionally created the need for a rescue.

Since it is very easy to get lost walking in the woods, please check with the Game Warden in your state before you leave home, just to be safe.
