When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Keys to Persistence and Winning

Have persistence and be successful!

One of our two small dogs demonstrates the persistence of an eagle. Like the eagle, he persists for food.

We know we should not give our dog table food, but Simba is just too cute.

He sits next to us at the table, with his tail sweeping the floor.  He looks at us and turns his adorable head from side to side and making cute noises. Then he gets up on his hind legs and actually walks on them. Sometimes he dances. This behavior almost always gets him some of our dinner.

Simba is a 9-year-old Morkie we rescued from an animal shelter. According to the shelter, he had a very hard life before we adopted him. He has lived with us for two years now. We have always provided for him generously, but he continues to behave as though he will starve. So he persists.

His persistence is usually successful. He has figured out four keys that enable him to persist and win!

  • BE PASSIONATE

Our Morkie loves to eat and is absolutely passionate about eating.

Like Simba, I am very passionate when I need to accomplish a goal. I passionately persisted with my husband’s Veterans Administration (VA) disability claim. He received a disability rating of 100% after only 18 months (a very short time in VA time). Even though his claim was being processed at a VA Center renowned for throwing away and denying claims.

Being passionate is a key to success in persistence!

  • HAVE FAITH IN YOUR ABILITY TO WIN

Simba has FAITH he will eventually get food if he continues to act adorable.

He knows we laugh and smile when he walks on his hind legs. And he believes he will get our food or a bacon treat if he persists by making us laugh.

I have helped several people get Social Security Disability benefits, sometimes within 30 days with an extra year of back pay. I believe I will succeed and I do. If you keep believing you will win if you persist, you increase your chances of winning greatly.

  • NEVER BECOME OVERWHELMED

Simba never becomes overwhelmed or frustrated enough to stop his antics. He keeps his eye on his goal and does not let our initial denials overwhelm him.

I have refused to become overwhelmed with all of my health issues. Actually, I have overcome most of them. Nevertheless, I still work on the Traumatic Brain Injury daily by practicing the piano. I have overcome severe migraines, allergies, major depressive disorder, past physical injuries that had not healed correctly, and more. I simply did not become discouraged. The goal of overcoming my health issues one by one and focusing on role models who do not have these same issues have been crucial. Ultimately, I will overcome my traumatic brain injury by learning to play the piano.

Stay focused on your goal and a role model so you can avoid becoming overwhelmed.

  • BELIEVE THAT “NO” IS TEMPORARY

Simba believes our initial “no” is temporary. So he persists and acts even cuter and makes us laugh harder. He always wins.

I have won disagreements with the IRS and the state taxation department. They said no at first and I did not believe “no” would be the final answer. I persisted and won in each case.

Believe that “no” is temporary, and you will be more likely to succeed.

Do not be discouraged when dealing with a problem. Instead, continue to persist and truly believe you will win!

Soar like an eagle over life’s storms and persist until you win!
