When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Back-to-School Helpers!

Enable your child to succeed in school with these back-to-school helpers!

Encouraging you to enable your child to be healthy going back to school on near a river.

It is that time of year again!  Kids are going back to school.  They often get a variety of seemingly minor health issues that cause them to not perform their best in school.

Here are three common back to school health issues and ideas you can use to manage them.

Belly aches

Sometimes the diet changes that occur when your child eats different food for lunch can cause belly aches.

One easy and inexpensive cure for belly aches is apple cider vinegar.

Try mixing one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of warm water and adding a bit of honey for your child to drink.

Dr. Epley, a physician and father of two in Kirkland, Washington, gives it to his daughter when her stomach bothers her.  The enzymes and the acids in the apple cider vinegar help the body break down foods and proteins easier.  Breaking down foods and proteins easier speeds digestion and eases belly aches, bloating, and gas.

Insomnia

When school starts, a child’s sleep schedule changes.  This can make it difficult for a child to sleep.

Angela Hollis, M.D., encourages her child to color for 30 minutes before bedtime.  Coloring relaxes the amygdala, the area of the brain that is active when a person is stressed or fearful.  It encourages relaxation and helps a child to sleep.

Coloring with your child may help you to relax and sleep better too!

Blisters from new shoes

Most parents buy their children new clothes and shoes to return to school in the fall.  Sometimes, the new shoes cause blisters, and blisters can be painful and distracting.  They can cause a child to be unable to focus and learn in school.

Cynthia Bailey, MD,  a dermatologist, puts hydrocolloid dressing on her first grade daughter’s feet when this happens.  Hydrocolloid dressings are bandages made from a gum-like material.  These bandages keep the blister moist, speed healing, and reduce discomfort.
