When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Dolly’s Imagination

Dolly Parton created Imagination Library to enable all kids to be successful in life.

Encouraging you to be involved with Dolly Parton's imagination Library on near a river.

Dolly Parton had a dream.  She wanted to inspire children to love books.  Her Daddy was uneducated and could not read or write, so she created her Imagination Library to honor him.

What is Imagination Library?

Each child registered in this fantastic program receives a book every month.

Dolly loves to read to children.  Yesterday, I saw her reading her book, Coat of Many Colors to a group of children in Washington, DC.  She began by reading, but she started singing instead of reading as the book continued.

Coat of Many Colors is a great story.  This book tells the true story of a coat that her mother made for her when she was a child.  Because her family was very poor, she had no coat to wear as she walked to school.  One day someone gave her family many rags of many colors, so her Mom used those rags to sew Dolly a coat to wear to school.  As her Mom sewed, she told Dolly the story of Joseph’s coat of many colors from the Bible.

The next day, Dolly proudly wore her new coat to school, along with her shoes and pants and shirt that had many holes in them.  Dolly was proud of the coat her Mom had made for her because it was made with love, and she explained this to the kids at school who teased her because of her coat.

Twenty years ago, Dolly realized that many children whose families did not have money also lacked books in their home. Knowing that reading is the key to success, she founded her Imagination Library to give kids books to enable them to succeed in life.  Yesterday, Imagination Library gave its 100 millionth book to the Library of Congress in Washington DC.

We can all agree that reading is the key to success.  Children who read learn more, care more, become more, and dream more. So if you have enough food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head, and some money left over, please consider giving a child or organization a good book to read. You will be enabling our children, our future, to be successful in life and stay out of trouble.
