The success of every child begins in infancy. The messages we receive as children about ourselves make us or break us as adults.
When I was a child, I received these messages from my Grandma. Because of her messages, I loved her with all of my heart. When I was a teenager, a friend offered me a joint on prom night. When I saw the joint coming toward me, I thought about what Grandma would want me to do. And I said no even though everyone but me took a few hits from it. Grandma’s messages were stronger in my heart than the peer pressure around me at the time.
What messages did Grandma give me?
- You are important.
- I am here for you.
- Yes, I do trust you.
- You must follow the rules now and when you become an adult.
- I will always listen to you.
- You will be successful.
- I believe in you!
- If you need anything, just ask. I will do my best to make sure your needs are met.
- I love you with all of my heart!
Every single child deserves every chance to become successful. You can give your child or a child you know the chance to become successful if only you give him these messages.
To give a child these messages, actively listen to him. Spend time together and show him or her you care every chance you get. Also, teach him he must follow the rules every day of his life, because doing so creates safe boundaries around us.
If every child got these messages, there would be less violence and more healthy adults in the world. Most people who are violent, who use illegal drugs, and do not follow the laws probably did not get these messages.
Let’s all try to create a better world by sending every child these messages!
