Footprints in Your Heart

Who in your life leaves footprints in your heart?

Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Many people walk in and out of your life, but only true friends leave footprints in your heart.”  I would add to her quote one word, the word “should”.  Only true friends should leave footprints in your heart.

Too often we allow people who influence us negatively to leave footprints in our hearts.

It is easy to allow a negative person to do this.  You encounter a negative person that you must deal with and he or she says and does things that you cannot forget.  These words and actions can change your thoughts and feelings about life if you do not do your best to erase their impact as soon as possible.

Yesterday I allowed someone who was not supportive but negative instead to leave his impression in my heart, but today I am doing my best to erase his impression. How am I erasing the his footprints in my heart?

First, I am reminding myself continuously that his problems are not mine and I should not let them become my problems, that we each have our own cross to bear in life and I will not bear his cross for him.

Second, today I am taking care of myself!  Tomorrow some friends are coming up for dinner and a music performance, so I am simply doing what I need to do to prepare for tomorrow.  Writing clears my head so I will probably write a lot, practice piano, and do some housework today.

Third, once I have taken care of myself and cleared my head, I will help someone else.  Helping someone else always reminds me that I am not the only person in the world with a problem. It reminds me that many others have problems bigger than mine.

Please erase the impact of negative people and only allow true friends to leave footprints in your heart!  Allowing anyone else to do that just drags you down and no one deserves to be dragged down.
