Help a Child Soar

Some simple ways you can enable a child to soar like an eagle over life’s storms.

You can enable a child to soar like an eagle over life’s storms regardless of your finances.

Reading to a child creates a bond.

It prepares a child for academic success and builds his vocabulary. It increases a child’s attention span and cognitive abilities. And it boosts self-esteem and cognitive skills.

There is a new name for the condition of a child spending too much time indoors: Nature Deficit Disorder.  Spending time outdoors enables your child to be smarter, happier, more attentive, and less anxious.

A 2016 study at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute studied the benefits of music for children. Childhood music experiences actually accelerate brain development. Particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills.

Music experiences can be as simple as playing music for a child during nap time or dancing with a child. Music experience means just giving your child time to enjoy music.

Children love animals and loving animals benefits children.

Pets benefit children’s health.

Pediatrician and Allergist Dennis Ownby, MD studied how pets impact children’s health. He found that having multiple pets actually decreases a child’s risk of developing certain allergies.

Pets help build family bonds. They bring families grow stronger and closer and slow down the often hectic pace of life.

They develop a child’s nurturing abilities. Caring for a pet as a young child enables him to be a caregiver when he is older.

They increase social skills. Having a pet gives a child something to talk about and a shared interest with other children.

Pets also provide comfort and an emotional safety zone. A group of 5 year-olds were asked who they turn to when they feel sad, angry, scared, or have a secret to share. More than forty percent spontaneously replied that they turn to their pets. Children who get support from their animal companions are less anxious and withdrawn.

You do not need to be wealthy to enable a child to succeed. A library card, a pair of sneakers, a radio, and a gold fish bowl or other pet will help you reach this goal.

  • B J, you touched on a subject which many are afraid to address in this day and time. I don't recall anyone reading to me when I was a child but enjoyed reading as I do today. We read to our children from a very early age. Also, we spent the majority of our time outdoors, especially in the summer months. The only time we came in was to eat or go to bed at night. Children are missing so much today by failing to experience the joys of being outdoors. I heard a County School Superintendent once say that students who are involved in music during their high school time have a higher percentage of college graduates than those with out music in high school. Having a pet continues to teach our children many things about responsibility.
