When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

When to Hold On

Sometimes, I hold onto things for a long time. Recently, my habit proved worthwhile!

Like most people, I hold onto things—memories, ideas, and physical property. Sometimes these things are good, and sometimes bad.

About twenty years ago, I bought a pair of Lands’ End penny loafers. They were nice shoes, but they hurt my feet after I wore them a few times and I couldn’t return them.  But, through all of my moves, I kept them anyway.

Six years ago, I moved in with my second husband.  Wanting to please me, he bought me lots of chocolate. Yes, I enjoyed it very much, but it caused me to “outgrow “all of my clothes.  I kept the size 5 and 6 pants I wore then to encourage me to lose weight.

Eventually, I had multiple operations on both of my feet, and I also lost all of that weight since December of 2018. This afternoon, I was dressing for my first piano recital and found a pair of size six pants and my old penny loafers.  I put them on and found I could wear them after all of these years.

For many years, my second hubby asked me why I hold onto things.  My traumatic brain injury prevented me from clearly explaining why, but now I have found the words to explain my habit.

No, I am not a hoarder.

I don’t have piles of stuff in my home or even in my closet.

But I do hold onto some things to remind myself that

I have done better in the past and can do better now.

Tonight at the piano recital I proudly sat at the piano playing for the audience wearing my size 6 pants and penny loafer shoes, and this felt really great. I worked hard to be able to wear these clothing items, and my efforts have paid off.

Sadly, I also hold onto negatives sometimes—bad memories and negative thoughts. No one should hold onto these things!

Do you hold onto things?  Use these things to remind yourself you have done better and that you can do better now! But whatever you do, let go of the negatives.  They won’t help you improve your life in any way!

Remember that life is a balance of knowing

when to hold on and when to let go…
