Keep Trying!

Encouragement to always keep trying on near a river.

Develop these traits and keep trying until you reach your goal!

Mandy Harvey lost her hearing at age 18 due to a connective tissue disorder.  She had been singing from a young age but gave up for years.  Then she decided to try to sing again.  She figured out that if she sang barefoot she could feel the vibration of the music in her feet.  And she wrote a song called Try that describes her struggle to sing again. When she sang her song “Try” on America’s Got Talent, Simon gave her the Golden Buzzer.

Today I saw an elderly woman completing a race by walking with a cane. She would not give up and had to keep trying. Even though she was the last one to finish the race, she did not give up.  She kept trying.

Like Mandy Harvey and the elderly woman in the race, I never give up.  I always keep trying.  I simply do not give up.

Mandy Harvey and I, as well as other persistent people, have some traits in common.

  • Find a goal that motivates.

Persistent people always have a goal that motivates us to keep trying until we succeed.

  • A burning desire.

We also have a burning desire to accomplish a goal.

  • Inner confidence.

We are not swayed by others’ opinions.  We know what we want to accomplish and will not give up until we succeed.

  • Self-discipline.

We persistent people have the discipline to keep working in spite of adversity because we believe our efforts today will pay off in the long run.

  • Ability to adapt.

When one plan is not working, we simply adapt our plan instead of giving up.

  • Commit to life-long learning and keep trying.

We are committed to learning something new every day of our lives.  Learning something new every day of our lives gives us more knowledge that we use to adapt our plans to succeed.

  • Role models.

We have role models.  Mine is my Grandma.  I loved that woman so much and I keep trying to make her proud of me.  Mandy Harvey’s role model for relearning to sing was her own prior singing ability. The elderly woman in the race had healthy younger role models to emulate.

Persistent people keep trying until we give ourselves the golden buzzer award like Simon gave Mandy in the video above.  When we accomplish our goal against the odds, we feel like Mandy felt when Simon gave her the Golden Buzzer.

You can give yourself the Golden Buzzer, too.  Develop these traits and keep trying until you succeed!

Parents, role model these traits.  Talk with your children about what you are doing when you are trying to reach a goal.  Teach them to persist.
