Last Minute Gift Ideas

Encouragement to find great holiday gifts on Near a River.

Still need to buy any gifts?

Do you need to buy gifts for a loved one who is hard to shop for?  If so, keep reading.

  • Smart Watch

This watch can make a phone call.

You can save up to ten numbers in it. When you need to make a phone call, you can use your watch instead of your phone.

It is a great gift for a woman who likes to walk or jog, because she can easily call for help if she ever needs to.  Also, it is a great gift for a child who begs for a cell phone; it does not allow for internet use but does allow for the child to call one of the ten stored phone numbers.

  • An amusing book

For someone who has health issues, there is a satirical social commentary about getting through the medical system.  It is called You’re Only Old Once by Dr. Seuss.  Written in typical Dr. Seuss verse, this book follows you through the various amusing clinics in the Golden Years Clinic on Century Square . From the Eyesight and Solvency Test to the Allergy Whiz to the room where you are properly pilled, “oglers” ogle you every step of the way.  I bought this book for my husband before we married because he was experiencing many medical issues and he found it amusing enough to give it a place of honor on our coffee table.

  • Games

If you know someone who likes to play board games, there is a series of “Monopoly” games about different topics…Bacon-opoly, Horse-opoly, and Dog-opoly.  These games have interesting facts about their individual topics and get excellent reviews on the internet.

  • Help around the house

Last year, my husband gave me an IRobot vacuum.  This is a disc shaped robot that can vacuum our entire home.  It is smart enough to find its charger when it runs out of juice and quiet enough that it does not upset our two small dogs.  I love the fact that is small enough to pick up the dust bunnies that inhabit the spaces under our furniture.  The manufacturer has an unconditional life time warranty.  If it vacuums up your dog’s accident in the house and quits working, the company sends you a new one at no charge.

  • Help to learn a new skill

Is someone you know struggling or wanting to learn something new?  There is a “For Dummies” book written about almost every subject.  There are eight different “For Dummies” books on the books shelf behind me as I type this post, and I use them frequently as reference books.  Right now I am reading the book “SEO for Dummies” to improve the SEO of my website, www.bobbiejrae.com/nearariver.  These books are written in language a lay person can easily understand and have many illustrations to encourage reading comprehension of a new topic.

Perhaps your loved one might benefit from tuition for a class to learn the subject.
