Lessons Learned from Life

Encouragement to heed these lessons learned from life on near a river.

What have you learned about your life along the way?

Do you regret how hard your life has been? Or do you think about what you have learned from your life?

I think about what I have learned from my life. I am only half way through my life, but I have learned a great deal along the way.

Life is not fair

If life were fair, my own life would have been different.

  • I would have been loved by my mother.
  • My ex-husband would not have beaten me up and caused me lots of health issues.
  • My brother would not have committed suicide.
  • I would not have needed over a dozen painful surgeries.

Life simply is not fair but I can survive and succeed anyway!

Keep being kind to others.

I have always tried to help others and be kind to everyone, even those who have treated me unkindly. Including my Mother, my ex-husband, and others.

My Grandmother taught me to always be kind to others.  She also taught me that my kindness will eventually return to me.  She was right.  The first almost 50 years of my life were miserable and depressing.  Many times I did not want to live anymore.  But I kept being kind to others and now my life is turning out pretty good.  Now I have a peaceful, happy home with a husband who loves me and two adorable dogs.

Never give up!

Grandma had a large garden that covered several acres.  She constantly had to work with it to produce her vegetables and fruits.  She had to constantly pull weeds and work in her garden until every bone in her body ached.  But she never gave up.   And her garden always produced great results in the end.

Her example taught me to never give up.

I have never given up and had to work very hard to become a published writer.  I had to overcome very unprofessional issues with Next Century Publishing,
a sister company to Rebel Press. Next Century Publishing kept failing to meet their own deadlines for publishing my book. The chief editor, Simon Presland, actually sent me an email using the f-word in a sentence that blamed me for their delay in getting my book launched.  Because this was such an unbelievable event, I included a picture of his email at the top of this post.

Simon’s email made me more determined to publish the book.

I did get it published with another publisher. I am proud of the fact that I persisted.

Help others and keep busy!

My grandmother always helped others as much as she could and kept busy.

Every day of my life, I help others. I try to help at least three people a day and try to keep busy.

When I was a young child and my Mother and her husband fought continually and fiercely, I did what Grandma did.  I took my tape recorder and flashlight and books on tape into the back of a closet and taught myself to read.  I felt happy when I spent time with books.  Spending time reading helped me to feel like I was doing something positive.

Focus on the positives!

Grandma always focused on the positives.  Even when Grandpa had to go to a nursing home and she missed him terribly, she thought about what was good in her life.

I do my best to copy her every day of my life.  Focusing on the positives helps reduce depression and anxiety and PTSD.

It also gives me a reason to keep trying my best and encourages me to continue to believe that something else good is around the corner.
