When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

A Monster or Not a Monster?

Is it a monster?  Or is it just something ordinary?

Encouraging you to figure out if something really is a monster or not on near a river.
Simba sees a monster when no one else does!

This morning we took our dogs to the Veterinarian.  Simba has issues with other dogs so I went in with Chico and scoped out the waiting room. No other dogs were there so my husband brought Simba in.  After a few minutes, Simba started acting like he was losing his little mind.  He began growling and barking as if a huge monster was about to hurt us.

Simba carried on a few minutes and we kept looking around.  Finally Simba lunged toward a Halloween candy dish shaped like a black cat.  Speaking lovingly to him and reassuring him that everything was okay, I picked up the dish and set it down in front of him so he could see it was not a threat.  Meanwhile, my husband and the receptionist were laughing so hard that their bellies could have split open.  And Simba calmed down when he saw the offensive monster was just a candy dish.

Two weeks ago, the same thing happened when I was walking both dogs.  A neighbor had a scarecrow decoration by his driveway.  Simba thought the scare crow was real and would attack us.  While he carried on loudly enough to wake up the dead in the cemetery almost 3 miles away, I walked Simba slowly to the scare crow and calmly and lovingly showed him it was not real.  Again, he calmed down.

Poor Simba!  We adopted Simba two years ago when he was eight years old.  Before he joined our household, he had a very hard life. And sometimes his eyes play tricks on him.   Sometimes when my husband, Chico, and I look at something that appears normal to us, Simba looks at it and perceives it is a monster.

Life is like this problem that Simba has with perceiving monsters. When something looks really threatening to us, perhaps we should step back and analyze the situation. Is it really a monster?  Or is it something ordinary we can deal with?

If you are like Simba and blow things out of proportion, perhaps you need to find the presence of mind to look around and discern if your monster is real. Take a few deep breaths, and focus on a single positive thing in your life for a few minutes, then return your thoughts to what is upsetting you.  Then analyze the cause of your upset and figure out if you should be upset by it.

Soar like an eagle over life’s storms.  Make sure the monsters you perceive are really monsters. Then calm down and think about how you should react to them.
