You never know when someone will repay your kindness with an even greater kindness!
A poor young man was selling door to door to put himself through college. At the end of the day, he reached into his pockets and only found a few crumpled dollar bills. He was hungry but could not afford to buy a meal.
He decided to ask for a meal at the next house. When he knocked, a beautiful young woman opened the door. Startled, he decided to ask for something to drink instead of food.
She returned with a large glass of milk, which he drank eagerly. “How much do I owe you?” he asked the woman.
The woman replied, “Nothing. It costs me $0 to be a decent human being. And my Mother taught me to never accept payment for kindness.” He thanked her and gratefully went on his way.
Years later, the woman became ill and needed immediate surgery. The man, now a surgeon, entered her hospital room and realized she was the woman who had given him milk when he was a medical student. From that moment on, he took great care of her to ensure the success of her recovery. He asked the billing department to give him the bill before it was sent to the patient. When he received it, he wrote something on it and mailed it to her.
When she received her bill, she dreaded opening it. She left it on her counter for a few days, staring at it as she walked past, certain that it would cost her more than 50 times the amount of money she had in her savings account. But on the third day, she finally found the courage to open the bill.
Not to her surprise, she found the bill was too expensive for her meager budget. But in the margin, she also found a long ago kindness repaid. The doctor had written, “Paid in full with one glass of milk.”
You never know when someone will return your kindness to you. Someone just may return your kindness to you just when you need it most and are not expecting it.
Things like this happen to me. When I do kind things for others, I do not expect anything in return. But once in a while, someone remembers that I was kind and repays me in a way that means the world to me. My piano lessons are an example. My piano teacher, a friend whom I have helped with computer issues more than once, has never allowed me to pay for piano lessons since she began teaching me in March of 2016. Even though she is a busy person and her time is valuable, she just hugs me at the end of each lesson instead of allowing me to pay her.
Remember that you never know when your kindness will be returned, so be kind as often as possible.
