When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Humanity and Peace

Martin Luther King served both humanity and peace by teaching others how to live with each other.

Everyone would agree that Martin Luther King Jr served humanity, as his niece stated this morning on the news.

Webster defines humanity as “the human race; human beings collectively” or “humaneness; benevolence”.

His teachings about humanity illustrate his beliefs about peace.

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

All Americans–Democrats, Republicans, and others—must realize something.  We are all in the boat of a country in disarray, and we all must work together to fix it—in spite of our diverse backgrounds and beliefs.

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

All Americans, regardless of their political party affiliation, need to start living!  We all need to rise above ourselves and understand the issues that others have.

“A lie cannot live.”

Others eventually discover someone else’s lies, so it is best not to lie in the first place.

“I have decided to stick with love.  Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

Hate destroys the hater, not the hated.  So if you want to destroy yourself, go on hating others.  Hurt others, lie about them, and treat them disrespectfully.  In the end, you will be the person burdened by your own behavior.

“It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.”

Sure, we all say we do not want war, and that we all want peace instead.  But peace requires sacrifice.  To have peace, we must be willing to put others interests above our own.

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.

The current leadership of the US government obviously needs to reflect on this quote. Then both sides need to sit down together, get to know each other and start communicating.  Communication is the key to successfully resolving problems.

For some, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is just a free day off from school or work, but it is so much more than that!  The United States celebrates this man’s life because he was one of the world’s greatest peacemakers!

Today we all need to recall that Martin Luther King Jr. was a peacemaker and apply his teachings to our lives.
