Where does poison really come from?
Many years ago in China, Li-Li married. Then as tradition dictated, she moved in with her new husband and mother-in-law.
But their home was not a happy one.
Unfortunately, Li-Li could not get along with her mother-in-law no matter how hard she tried. Their personalities were too different, and her mother-in-law’s habits angered her. And Li’s mother-in-law criticized her constantly.
Days turned into weeks and Li-Li and her mother-in-law fought constantly. Chinese tradition made the situation even worse. According to tradition, Li-Li must obey her mother-in-law’s every wish.
Finally, Li-Li could not stand her mother-in-law’s bad temper for one more hour and visited her father’s good friend, Mr. Huang the herb seller. After she told him about her situation, she asked him for some poison so she could solve the problem once and for all.
Mr. Huang sat and thought for a while. Finally he said, “Li-Li, I will help you with your problem, but you must listen to me and obey what I say.”
Eagerly and thankfully, she agreed.
“You cannot use a quick-acting poison to get rid of your mother-in-law because that would cause people to become suspicious,” he said. “Therefore, I am giving you a number of herbs that will slowly build up poison in her body. Every other day, prepare a delicious meal. Then put a little of these herbs into her serving. Make sure no one suspects you when she dies and always act kind and loving toward her. Never argue with her, obey her every wish, and treat her like a queen.”
Li-Li thanked him and hurried home to start murdering her mother-in-law.
For months Li-Li served the herbs to her mother-in-law. Remembering what Mr. Huang had said about avoiding suspicion, she controlled her temper, obeyed her mother-in-law, and treated her lovingly and kindly.
Mr. Huang’s plan to eliminate the poison in Li-Li’s home worked.
Six months later, the whole household had changed. Li-Li had practiced controlling her temper so much that she no longer became angry or upset. She had not had an argument in six months with her mother-in-law, who now seemed much kinder and easier to get along with. And Li-Li’s mother in law’s attitude toward her had changed and she began to love Li-Li like her own daughter.
Li-Li’s husband was happy with his home now.
One day, Li-Li returned to Mr. Huang. “Please help me stop the poison from killing my mother-in-law! She has changed into such a nice woman. I love her like my own mother and do not want her to die now!”
Smiling, he replied. “No worries. I never gave you any poison. I gave you herbs and vitamins to improve her health. Li-Li, the poison was in your mind and your attitude toward her, but you have replaced all of that poison with love.”
