When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

Reduce and Save

Want to reduce your electric bill and save some money?

Encouragement to reduce your electricity bill on near a river. BJ’s actual current electric bill.

Thirteen months ago we moved from a small home to larger home. We needed more space so I could have a quiet place to write and a space big enough for our piano.

Unfortunately, even though we are still just two people and two small dogs, our electricity bill more than doubled after we moved.  For the past year, I have not enjoyed writing checks to our power company!

Well, I will enjoy paying the electric bill that came in today’s mail.  For the month of May of 2018, our bill was only $77. In contrast, our bill for the same time period last year was $144.  I finally figured out how to reduce our use and save money.

How did we save almost forty-seven  percent on our electric bill?  Here are the magic actions that accomplished this goal.

Avoid use of appliances when possible

I looked at the electricity usage of each of our appliances.  Our dishwasher uses the most kilowatt hours of electricity and our clothes dryer uses only a small amount less than the dishwasher.  So I now wash dishes by hand.  I have only used the dishwasher once in the last month, when I had to sterilize some dishes from the camper that mice had gotten into.

If you choose not to wash dishes by hand, you could turn off the heat drying in your dishwasher and let your dishes air dry instead.

Also, I hang most of the laundry on a drying rack or clothesline instead of drying it in the dryer.

Reduce use during peak time

I called Eversource, our electricity company, and asked a simple question.  What hours are peak use hours and non-peak use hours?  It turns out that peak use hours are from 8 am to 8 pm, and non-peak use hours are from 8 pm to 8 am.

So I do not do wash laundry until after 8 pm.  Then after I wash it, I hang as much of it as I can on the drying rack.
