A Silly Song

This silly song taught me an unforgettable lesson.

When I was young, my older brother walked me to school. We entertained each other; he taught me silly songs and other goofy things, and I constantly doused him by jumping in puddles.

He sung one song that I cannot forget to the tune of the Marines’ Hymn.

From the halls of the classroom,

To the shores of Bubble Gum Bay.

We are fighting for our freedom

With spit wads, gum, and clay.

We are fighting for our recess

And to keep our desks a mess.

We shall proudly claim our title

As teacher’s number one pest!

Listening to a performance of the correct words to the Marines’ Hymn on Veterans Day today, I felt guilty. Even though I have traumatic brain injury, I still heard my brother’s voice singing his version instead of the musician honoring our brave military and veterans.

This silly song that I cannot forget has taught me how difficult it is to forget what someone says or does to you. Because of this, I always do my best to communicate only positive and encouraging messages to others through my actions and words.

Today my friend’s husband died. He died with his wife, who never said cross words to him, at his side. Because of her unconditional love and support, he passed into the next world with a smile on his face.

How have you treated others today?  Did you say or do things that you wish you hadn’t?  If you did, the beneficiary of your message might not forget your broadcast. Do you want someone to remember you by unkind words or actions (s)he couldn’t forget?

Remember that no one knows when (s)he will take the last breath.

So if you communicated anything

that someone could consider untoward or unkind today,

perhaps you should make it right before you go to sleep.
