Are you suffering from spring allergies like we are?
We are in the sunny south instead of our home since it is still too cold there now and the cold affects my husband’s heart disease. Every morning when we have been taking our dogs outside, we have noticed something that is affecting both of us—a dusting of yellow pollen.
In my opinion, spring is the most beautiful time of the year. Birds begin to chirp again, bees buzz around, flowers bloom, and leaves begin to grow on trees. Unfortunately, when God is dressing the land around us in beautiful colors, some of us become sick with spring allergies.
I have severe allergies, hemiplegic migraines, and asthma as well; I have landed in the Emergency Room on too many occasions because of these issues. Unfortunately, I am intensely allergic to many of the plants that are starting to look beautiful. Yesterday I spent most of the day in bed with the air purifier running constantly.
If you have spring allergies, you might want to consider taking these same precautions yourself.
- See a doctor and find out what you can take for your allergies. Even over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medications can have negative interactions with other medications you may be taking, so please do not take any OTC medication without your Dr.’s blessing (especially if you take heart medication). If you suffer from nasal and sinus congestion, ask your doctor if Neo Synephrine might help you. Neo Synephrine is available OTC at Walmart and seems to instantly relieve congestion for hours.
- Using a neti pot is a safe way for anyone to relieve congestion. It does not affect any health conditions and also clears congestion very well. You can purchase a neti pot at CVS or any other pharmacy.
- Keep windows closed.
- Wear a hat outside and remove it before entering your home. Store it in a contained space when you enter your home so the pollen on it does not bother you.
- Remove your shoes at the door before entering your home.
- Keep your pets off your bed and out of your bedroom at night.
- Shower before going to bed and put your dirty clothes in an enclosed space away from
where you sleep at night. - Upgrade the filter for your air conditioning and heating in your home to a filter designed to remove pollen from the air, and also use a high quality portable air purifier in your bedroom at night with the door and windows closed.
- Before you go out each morning during your allergy season, check the pollen count in your area on www.weather.com or another reputable website that gives information on this topic. If the pollen count is high in your area, try to stay indoors as much as possible. Also, check these sources for information about when the pollen count is expected to rise where you live and begin to take your allergy medication up to two weeks prior to that time. Your allergy medication needs time to build up in your system to be as effective as possible.
- Put allergy covers on your pillows and mattresses.
