Enjoy a Successful Marriage

Five keys to a healthy marriage.

Getting married is romantic. But how can you keep a marriage healthy for life?

In 2015, researchers interviewed 700 people married for 40,000 years collectively. Some divorced couples were interviewed also.

Here are the five keys to a successful marriage learned from this study.

  • Good communication

Good communication is critical to a healthy marriage. It builds a stronger relationship.

  • Know each other well before you marry

Do not say “I do” just because you are involved in a passionate romance.  Get to know the person.  Learn about what they like and dislike. What their quirks are.  Never marry someone you want to change!

Marrying someone you do not know well is a recipe for an unhappy, failed relationship. So is marrying someone you want to change.

  • Marry someone you connect with

To cultivate a successful happy marriage, spouses need to connect.

This means sharing basic values and agreeing on important issues such as finance and how to raise children.

  • Work together

When you marry, you both become one of two people in a partnership.  True partners consider each other’s problems as problems for the partnership. Your spouse’s problems are your responsibility.

Working together to solve problems strengthens a marriage.

  • Marriage as commitment

Marriage is not a partnership for only as long as the initial passion lasts. It is a lifelong commitment  for better or worse.

Marriages in which one or both partners consider the relationship a contract easily broken end in divorce court. Solve issues and work towards a happy relationship when you hit a rough patch.
