Here is test that will help you watch what you say.
In Ancient Greece, Socrates was known for valuing knowledge.
One day an acquaintance met Socrates and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?
“Hold on a minute,” Socrates replied. “Before you tell me anything, I’d like you to pass the Triple Filter Test”.
“Triple filter?”, his friend asked.
“That’s right. Before you tell me about my friend, take a moment to filter what you are going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is truth. Are you certain that what you are about to tell me is true?”
“No”, the man said, “Actually I just heard it and…”
“All right”, said Socrates. “So you really do not know if it is true. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend good?”
“No, on the contrary”, the man replied.
“So, you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not sure if it’s true. You may still pass the test, though. Because there is one filter left: the filter of usefulness. Is what you want to tell me useful?”
“No, not really.”
“Well”, concluded wise Socrates,
“if what you want to tell me is neither true, good, nor useful,
why do you want to tell it to me at all?”
