This lesson from nature can help you solve problems with others.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Have you ever had a problem where you just could not work something out with someone?\u00a0 Did you ever shut down communication with someone by not communicating effectively? Communication was not working at all anymore and you were at an impasse…<\/p>\n

We have all “chased someone up a tree” like a squirrel at one time or another in our lives.\u00a0 Early this morning I observed nature and some squirrels.\u00a0 The squirrels illustrated how to deal with this problem.<\/p>\n

I walked past a beautiful \u201creflection pond\u201d.\u00a0 The pond was beautiful as the shadows of the trees stretched across it.<\/p>\n

Then I noticed some young grey squirrels running around by a tree by the edge of the pond.\u00a0 They both sat munching breakfast. I walked toward them to take their picture and could only get one picture.<\/p>\n

Neither squirrel liked me or my camera so they scurried up the tree.<\/p>\n

Then they disappeared into their hole.<\/p>\n

Waiting patiently, I quietly stood on the opposite side of the road without threatening the young critters.\u00a0 After a while, one of them decided I am not a threat.\u00a0 After peeking out of his hole, he came down. Then he munched some more breakfast. I walked slowly toward him as he munched without making eye contact. Finally, he allowed me to get close to him and take his picture.<\/p>\n

The problem was that I had been too aggressive for the squirrels at first and accidentally intimidated them.\u00a0 They needed time to understand that I was not a threat.\u00a0 Even after I waited a while, only one of them came out and decided I am okay and would not hurt him.<\/p>\n

What does this lesson from nature mean? When someone feels threatened, give him space and wait patiently.\u00a0 Wait for any indications that he might be willing to communicate again before you try to communicate again.\u00a0 Then communicate quietly without any behaviors that the other person might perceive as threatening. You might have to wait a short while or a long time, but waiting patiently without showing any behaviors that the other person might perceive as aggressive is critical to your success in working out your problem.<\/p>\n

You can solve your squirrel problem. Just be patient and communicate appropriately at the right time.<\/p>\n
