The counselor listened.\u00a0 She advised me to leave him because of his abuse and make certain I communicate effectively until I do leave him.<\/p>\n<p>I asked her, &#8220;How can I communicate effectively with a man with narcissistic personality disorder, who also has untreated bipolar depression?&#8221;\u00a0 She told me to try these strategies to communicate with him. These communication strategies improve communication with most people, from young children to older people regardless of their issues.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Eye contact<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always make eye contact to make certain the person knows you are speaking with him.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>A calm tone of voice<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always use a calm tone of voice.\u00a0 If you are too upset to use a calm tone, you probably need to wait to discuss this issue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>\u201cI Statements\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Begin every subject with an \u201cI statement\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cI feel _____ when ______happens. Or I feel ______ when I hear the words _____.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I statements enable you to get the other person\u2019s attention without blaming him or her.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Never accuse!<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Never accuse the person you are speaking with, regardless of how you angry you feel.\u00a0 Accusing the other person does not help you to work together toward a resolution.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Restate<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Restate what the other person says in your own words to make certain you have understood what he has said.\u00a0 Then pause and give him a chance to think about your restatement.<\/p>\n<p>Restating what the other person has said gives him a chance to correct any misunderstandings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>One issue at a time<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only discuss one issue at a time.\u00a0 Do not drag other issues or frustrations into the conversation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Try to resolve the issue<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After both parties understand the issue as well as it can be understood, try to resolve the issue.\u00a0 Suggest more than one resolution.\u00a0 Then work together to choose a resolution both parties agree on.<br \/>\n***<\/p>\n<p>You can communicate effectively with anyone, regardless of any issues either of you may have.\u00a0 You simply have to maintain control of your emotions and remember the steps to effective communication.<\/p>\n<p>Effective communication is vital to every relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Parents, remember to always role model effective communication with your children.\u00a0 If you do, they will be more likely to communicate effectively with you as they get older.<\/p>\n<p>Soar like an <a
