When a storm is coming, all other birds seek shelter. The eagle alone avoids the storm by flying above it. So, in the storms of life may your heart be like an eagle’s and soar above.” – Author Unknown

If Not Today, When?

Encouraging you to do things today on Near a River.

Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!

Think about this.  It is Christmas Eve, and you still have not done your Christmas shopping.  Instead of taking your time in an uncrowded store, now you must shop in elbow to elbow shopping traffic.  Your procrastination has taken the joy out of buying gifts for loved ones.

The more you get done each day, the more time you have to do the things you love.  And the Christmas season is all about enjoying life with loved ones.

How can you stop procrastinating?  Here are some ideas.

  • Make a list and check it twice!

Write down what needs to be done today and the deadline for completing it.

This way you do not have to choose what you will do first.  You simply do the things with the soonest deadline first.

  • Eliminate distractions

Most of us are distracted by technology and other things constantly.  Turn off cell phones and go to a quiet place to accomplish your task if you need to.

  • Discern the reason

Why are you not willing to clean the bathroom or the garage today?  Understanding reasons takes away their power. Once you understand your reasons for procrastinating, you can tell yourself that the task is important and put a positive spin on it. Then you can figure out the steps you need to take to complete it.

Come to grips with the reason you put a task off and you will be able to figure out how to complete the task.

  • Break bigger tasks down

Sometimes I procrastinate on cleaning the house.   It takes several hours and I do not enjoy cleaning.  However, I do clean the house when I make a list of smaller that tasks are part of cleaning the house and check them off one by one as I complete them.

  • Try changing your environment

I procrastinated on filing important papers for over a year.  Last week, the important papers covered the table in my home office. My office looked like a slob worked there.  I changed my environment. I set up a small folding table in the basement and carried all the papers to an empty room in the basement.  Finally, I got the job done.  Today I am free to pack clothing and other things we will need for our winter trip.

  • Spend time with a go getter

I have a friend who is a go getter.  When I spend time with her, I find motivation to get the tasks done.

You cannot reach a goal by procrastinating.  Remember the definition of tomorrow! As my friend Wendy says, “If not today, when?”

You can accomplish your goals today and every other day of your life.

Like most things in our lives, we must plan and prioritize our plans with action. When I was pastor, I would list the things I needed to do each day with the most important things to be done listed first.

"Each reader's heart is like an eagle's and can soar above the storms in life..." - Near a River's Author, BJ Rae.

Written with uplifting words of encouragement, Near a River is a photographic children's book about two young bald eagles who are eager for their mother to teach them to fly so they may soar over the storms in their lives. Near a River encourages early childhood reading. BJ hopes that every child becomes a strong reader and soars above the storms in life.
